Marketing in the news

I was interested in this Subway ad because one, I like subway and two, it caught my eye when a word was crossed out with a bold black line. The article was commenting on how the billboard looked in order to get drivers attention as they drove along the highway or Interstate. The company, Subway, used great strategies in order to advertise themselves, they were simply trying to get the message across that they want you, the public to have lunch with them and spend your money with them.

Subways value proposition is that when you eat there, you’ll eat fresh. The slogan “Eat Fresh” implies that all their veggies will be at their peak of nutrition to give you the best taste to your sandwich or salad. They want to make you feel like they genuinely care about your health and therefore, deliver the best meal full of nutrition to fill you up while being healthy. The marketing relevance that Subway presented on that billboard showed a strategic approach. By marking out a word that was much larger than anything else on the billboard they knew that it would catch people’s eye and they would take a second glance to see what the word that is in bold says, then draw their eyes to read underneath and get the true message.

The challenge that Subway may be facing is other competing fast food restaurants that are also in high demand or on the top of peoples fast, easy, takeout meal list. For instance, Big Town hero, although not everywhere compared to Subway, they are competition to Subway because they also make sandwiches and make their own bread every single day fresh and on site. With the competition being presented, Subway is trying to make themselves noticed to the public. What made their marketing approach unique, was the fact that when people's eyes catch the sign, their mind immediately assumes that the word marked out says something specific. They then take a second glance to further read to find out it is a Subway billboard and may tempt them to go to subway.

What I would do if I were the product manager would be to do something more unique that would also stand out but not lead the public to think that the word says something inappropriate, it might send a negative message about the company. I would have made the billboard possibly ask a question for example, “are you hungry?” then the rest of the billboard be covered with a subway sandwich that looks fresh, healthy, and delicious to entice the public to eat there.
